Dog-sledding on the Krippenstein
Dog-sledding on the Krippenstein

The first dog sleds were used by the Inuits in North America and Greenland. The breadth of the Krippenstein-Dachstein plateaus are also perfectly suited to this fascinating sport, where the relationship between the Mushers (=dog sled guides) with is pack is the most important basis for a functioning team.

Lodge landlord Toni Rosifka is the specialist for mushing in this area. His huskies don’t just provide a fantastic sight for dog fans in front of the lodge, yet they also work the sleds regularly, so as to guarantee that the dogs are kept in an appropriate manner.

It is very important to Toni that his dogs are provided conditions which are as natural as possible. Accordingly he only uses his dogs for early beginners’ dog sledding courses, when he gets the feeling that his four-legged friends will accept the respective Musher candidates!! In the meantime the lodge dogs head for a well-deserved rest in the guesthouse and only go out on excursions with the landlady Moni. It is always fascinating to observe the pack and the internal structure "during the hunt"!

Dog Base - holiday for dogs

Dog Base

The lodge provides, in a little cosy house – the so-called Dog Base – an idyllic place for guest mushers and their dogs, which is just a little bit away from the lodge. It is important for every dog guide that the pack live closely together and that in the Dog Base they can spend 24 hours a day with their four-legged friends. During the day the Krippenstein Plateau awaits, with lots of kilometres of terrain to train on – dogs and mushers won’t get bored here!
