The lodges on the Krippenstein offer you the ideal starting position for the ski piste (and for later on too ;))). Those who prefer to holiday in the valley, will find an ideal base camp in the towns of Obertraun and Hallstatt. A brief description of both towns can be found here. To make it a little easier for you to choose the ideal place for your ski holiday!
The valley station for the Krippenstein-Dachstein-Bahn is located in tranquil Obertraun. There are lots of cosy country guesthouses and private rooms here, which indulge their guests with the special hospitality of the Innere Salzkammergut region. It could well be that your landlord will go skiing with you, it is altogether very friendly in Obertraun. Don’t worry, you won’t miss out on any après-ski - the legendary ‘Haifischbar’ just has to be seen!
Obertraun is located at 520 metres altitude, embedded between the southern banks of Hallstättersee and the Salzkammergut Mountains. Since 1920 Obertraun has been an independent municipality. Formerly the town was a part of the salt marsh municipality of Hallstatt. Obertraun today has 745 inhabitants.
Asides from its variety of sporting opportunities, Obertraun (and the entire Dachstein region) are also captivating due its culture and contrasting sites of natural beauty, covering just a few square kilometres. In 1998 UNESCO took the opportunity to designate the municipalities of Hallstatt and Obertraun, along with areas of the municipality of Gosau (e.g. the Gosauseen) and Bad Goisern as the “Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut” World Heritage region. Along with Hallstatt, the Dachstein caves (the Giant Ice Cave, the Mammut Cave and the Koppenbrühler Cave) which are located in Obertraun, were a decisive factor in this designation as a World Heritage Site!
Other winter sports activities
Obertraun’s cross-country slope which measures 14 km, is suitable for experts as well as beginners. At 8 km there is an additional track for skaters. The slope is just the place for anyone who wants to find their rhythm. A circuit of nine kilometres, which is almost completely flat, follows a really nice circuit through the equally flat Koppenwinkel conservation area. Nature lovers will find a pristine landscape as far as the eye can see. There are 20 km in total, and the slopes can be started at various entrance points.
Ice skating and Curling
There is an ice-skating rink in the leisure centre which is available to use for free. Any of you who might like to have a go at curling can do so on the rink in Höllwirt (please register for this in advance by telephoning +43 6131 394). Curling stones can be hired in Obertraun Tourist Office (Tel. +43 6131 351).
As soon as the snow conditions permit, the toboggan run in Obertraun is also prepared. Ascent is only possible on foot from “Stiegergasse” toward "Wasserfall-Wand”. Length ca. 1.2 kilometres
Just 5 kilometres before Obertraun is Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and probably one of the most beautiful lake locations in the world, simply indescribably special. In winter in particular you get t o enjoy the charm of this special place to the full (when there is a brief interlude from the flurry of camera flashes popped by summer visitors).
Hallstatt is set in a picturesque location on the south west banks of Hallstätter See, on the alluvial lands of the Mühlbach. This town has, since early historic times, been known for its salt mining.
Gosau is around 18 km away, and is the entrance point to the Innere Salzkammergut area in the ski region of Dachstein West. In Hallstätt’s Echerntal there is a small T-bar lift for children and beginners (Speiger ski lift). If you want to leave your skis outside, you can go for a peaceful winter hike in Echerntal, or to the Salzberg. At the sports shop, Janu, there are ice skating boots, snow-shoes etc. available for hire.

Tip: In Hallstatt you can experience culture as you sleep – many of Hallstatt's hotels are listed buildings and are of exceptional architectural interest.
